An adaptor protein links signaling components by acting as an accessory to the chief proteins of the signal transduction pathway. Adaptor proteins lack any intrinsic enzymatic activity, instead they mediate specific protein-protein interactions that drive the formation of protein complexes. The specificity of Toll-like receptor signaling occurs by means of adaptor proteins possessing Toll–interleukin 1 receptor (TIR) domains.
