ligand

A ligand is any molecule, atom, or ion that specifically and reversibly binds to a protein, inducing a conformational change in the protein.

Common examples include neurotransmitters or signaling molecules that bind to receptor proteins and DNA (as a ligand) bound to protein transcription factors.

ligation

In biology, ligation is the joining or binding of two molecules or a ligand to a receptor protein – two strands of RNA spliced, or two strands of DNA ligated by a DNA ligase; an antigen ligated to a CD on a leukocyte.
